What this role actually is

Presales sits between sales and delivery in B2B services and product firms. When a client floats an RFP or asks for a pitch, you are the team that shapes the solution story, writes the proposal, builds the deck and demo, and prices the effort with the delivery teams. On our campus this season it showed up four times: C5i's Presales Associate on analytics deals, Decimal Technologies' Presales Manager on BFSI low-code platform deals, and two HCLTech SMT tracks covering IT services bids and Digital Business Services pursuits. You do not carry a revenue quota. You carry deadlines, win-themes and the job of making five internal teams sound like one coherent offer.

Day to day

  • Responding to RFPs and RFIs end to end: reading a 40-page client requirement, drafting the response storyline, and stitching inputs from delivery, solution architects and finance into one bid before a hard deadline
  • Building solution decks, case studies and product demos. At Decimal that means narrating the Vahana and Saarathi platforms to banks and NBFCs; at C5i it means turning analytics case studies into client-language pitch material
  • Account and competitive research: profiling the client's business, mapping their pain points (say an NBFC's slow loan onboarding) to your firm's capabilities, and tracking what TCS, Infosys or Accenture would bid against you
  • Working with delivery teams on effort estimates and pricing: why a deal is structured as managed services versus time-and-materials, and what that does to the commercial story
  • Joining discovery and deal-defence calls where the client grills the proposal, then reworking the pitch overnight based on what landed and what did not
  • Crafting win-themes: the two or three reasons this client should pick you, repeated consistently across the executive summary, the deck and the demo

Skills that matter

  • Business and proposal writing: crisp, client-language prose under deadline, not academic essays
  • PowerPoint storyboarding and pitch design (a genuine craft here, not a soft skill)
  • Solution selling: translating a product's capabilities into the client's business problem
  • Domain fluency in the vertical you serve: analytics and AI for C5i, BFSI and digital lending for Decimal, cloud, ADM and infra for HCLTech
  • Competitive and account research
  • Cross-functional stakeholder coordination: pulling sales, product, delivery and finance into one bid
  • Time management across several simultaneous bid deadlines

Who fits

The marketer who loves the pitch more than the field visit. If your best MBA moments were case competitions, decoding a messy brief, building the deck at 2 a.m., defending it before a jury, presales is that as a full-time job. It suits strong writers and deck-builders who want B2B exposure without a day-one sales quota, and who can genuinely enjoy learning a technical domain (analytics, lending tech, IT services) well enough to sell it. It is a poor fit if you need to own the client relationship yourself, or if you dislike deadline-driven document work.

What interviewers ask

What does a presales person actually do, and how is it different from sales?

How to answer: Show you know the deal cycle: sales owns the relationship and the quota; presales owns the RFP response, the solution deck, the demo and the pricing inputs that win the deal. Mention deal-defence calls and coordinating delivery teams. That specificity separates you from candidates who think presales is just 'sales support'.

Explain our business to me. What do we sell and who pays for it?

How to answer: This is the make-or-break question in these interviews. For C5i: AI-led analytics services such as marketing mix modelling and CX analytics, sold as multi-year engagements to global enterprises. For Decimal: a low-code platform, Vahana, that digitises lending journeys for banks and NBFCs. For HCLTech: IT services deals across cloud, ADM and infra. Explain it in the client's language, not the website's.

Walk me through how you would respond to an RFP we just received.

How to answer: Give a process: read and decompose the requirements, qualify the deal, identify win-themes, assign sections to delivery, architects and finance, write the executive summary yourself, build the pricing narrative, then rehearse the defence. Naming win-themes and deal-defence shows you have done your homework.

Sell me this product. Give me a two-minute pitch on one of our offerings.

How to answer: Prepare one rehearsed narrative before the interview: a concrete client, their pain, your solution, the measurable outcome. For Decimal, narrate digitising an NBFC's loan-origination journey; for C5i, walk through a published case study. Most candidates stop at the company one-liner. A rehearsed use case wins.

Why would a client pick us over TCS, Infosys or Accenture, or over building in-house?

How to answer: Have one honest differentiation argument per company: HCLTech's engineering and infra heritage, C5i's marketing-analytics depth, Decimal's speed-to-launch for regulated lenders against a two-year in-house build. Concede the competitor's strength first. It makes your argument credible.

How do you handle four internal teams giving you conflicting inputs the night before a bid submission?

How to answer: This is a stakeholder-management behavioural. Use a case-competition or committee example: how you forced a decision, who you escalated to, and how you protected the deadline. They are testing whether you can chase senior delivery folks without any authority over them.

You are a marketing student. Why presales and not a brand or sales role?

How to answer: Frame presales as B2B marketing at its sharpest point: positioning, messaging and storytelling applied to a live deal with a scoreboard of win or loss. Say you want to learn how enterprise buying actually works before owning a P&L or an account. Do not sound like you are settling for it.

How to prep

  • 1. Learn the specific offering before the interview, not the industry in general. Read two or three published C5i case studies, watch Decimal's Vahana and Saarathi demos and explainer videos, skim two recent HCLTech deal announcements, and be able to retell one in client language
  • 2. Rehearse one end-to-end pitch out loud: client, pain point, solution, outcome, in under three minutes. This single artefact answers half the interview
  • 3. Understand deal structures at a basic level: managed services versus time-and-materials versus fixed-price, and why a client prefers each. HCLTech interviewers flagged that most MBA candidates cannot do this
  • 4. Build one crisp point of view on a live trend (GenAI in enterprise operations, cloud cost optimisation, digital lending in NBFCs) and connect it to what the company could pitch a client
  • 5. Bring writing and deck evidence: a case-competition deck, a live-project proposal, or a one-page RFP-style response you wrote. Presales hiring is largely a bet on your writing and storyboarding

Where it leads

In years one and two you are the bid engine, producing proposals, decks and research while absorbing the domain. By year three you typically lead pursuits: owning full RFP responses, running deal-defence calls, and managing solution inputs as a Presales or Bid Manager or a Solution Consultant. Years three to five fork three ways. You can move to the revenue side as an Account Manager or Business Development Manager, the most common jump, since you already know the offerings and the clients. You can go deeper into solutioning as a domain consultant or product specialist, for example BFSI solutions at a fintech or analytics consulting at a C5i-type firm. Or you can move into B2B and product marketing, where a presales grasp of what actually wins deals is rare and valued. In IT services like HCLTech, strong presales people also graduate into large-deal teams handling 50 million dollar plus pursuits, one of the fastest visibility tracks to senior sales leadership.
